The Universal Works Mountain Parka is a beast. An unlined duffle coat style parka with a large hood, chunky button placket, large patch pockets and raw edge detailing, all made from very special ebony Burel wool. Burel is an artisanal Portuguese fabric made entirely from wool and comes from the mountain regions of Portugal. After being carded, the wool is transformed into a mesh. The mesh is then twisted in the spinning process and turned into thread. The thread is then woven into a fabric, which is then transformed into bunting at the loom. The bunting is then submitted to a pounding process and other processes, until it is finally transformed into Burel. Burel is highly water resistant, very durable and versatile and has evolved from being used to make Shepherd’s capes and coats for rainy, snowy or cold days up in the mountains, to now being incorporated into this contemporary, highly functional parka.
